Ganadores del concurso universitario de vídeos divulgativos con enfoque Un Bienestar (One Welfare Science Slam, OWSM 2023)

El primer premio recae en un trabajo que explora las interconexiones de los trabajadores de mataderos de cerdos con los animales

El pasado jueves 29 de junio se celebró el concurso de vídeos divulgativos con enfoque Un Bienestar (One Welfare Science Slam, OWSM 2023) propuesto por Rebeca García Pinillos (One Welfare CIC) a estudiantes de la Universidad de Zaragoza y la Universidad de Notthingham. Esta iniciativa pretende promover y diseminar el concepto de Un Bienestar, que describe las interrelaciones entre el bienestar animal, el bienestar humano y el ambiente físico y social, complementando el concepto de Una Salud, para una integración completa del bienestar animal en otras disciplinas.

Adriana Pastrana, estudiante de doctorado en el Programa de Producción Animal de la Universidad de Zaragoza obtuvo el primer premio, que incluye hasta 1500 libras esterlinas de contribución a los gastos de viaje para asistir a la conferencia One Welfare World, que se celebrará en octubre de este año en Burgos, porque el jurado le otorgó la mayor puntuación considerando entre otros aspectos, el vínculo de su trabajo con el concepto Un Bienestar, la novedad y calidad de la investigación y lo atractivo del vídeo.

Jessica Burridge, estudiante de doctorado (School of Veterinary Medicine and Science, University of Nottingham) realizó un vídeo que analiza el comportamiento y las decisiones de los propietarios sobre el bienestar de équidos de trabajo, por el que obtuvo el segundo premio. Por otro lado, Laura Estévez, estudiante del Máster Universitario en Salud Global: Integración de la Salud Ambiental, Humana y Animal, de la Facultad de Veterinaria de nuestra Universidad, consiguió el tercer puesto por presentar su investigación de las relaciones campesino-animal en comunidades de alta montaña en México y Ecuador.

El concurso fue celebrado de modo online en la plataforma Zoom, organizado por Amelia García (Dep. de Patologia y Salud Púbica Veterinaria, F. de Veterinaria, Universidad de Nottingham) y Virginia Resconi (Dep. de Producción Animal y Ciencia de los Alimentos, F. de Veterinaria, Universidad de Zaragoza, Instituto Agroalimentario de Aragón IA2), donde se presentaron los vídeos de 8 minutos de duración (en inglés o español) y los concursantes respondían a preguntas sobre sus trabajos. Armando Mendez (Data engineer) y Almudena Ortiz (Bioscience) de la Univ. Nottingham, junto con Irene Pérez Ibarra (Economía, Sociología y Política Agraria, Unizar), completaron el jurado de cinco miembros, quienes valoraron a los concursantes.

First prize goes to an entry exploring the interconnections of pig slaughterhouse workers with animals

The One Welfare Science Slam (OWSM 2023) proposed by Rebeca García Pinillos (One Welfare CIC) to students from the University of Zaragoza and the University of Nottingham was held on Thursday 29th June. This initiative aims to promote and disseminate the One Welfare concept, which describes the interrelationships between animal welfare, human welfare and the physical and social environment, complementing the One Health concept, for a full integration of animal welfare into other disciplines.

Adriana Pastrana, PhD student in the Animal Production Programme at the University of Zaragoza won the first prize, which includes up to £1500 contribution to travel expenses to attend the One Welfare World conference, to be held in October this year in Burgos, because the jury awarded her the highest score considering among other aspects, the link of her work with the One Welfare concept, the novelty and quality of the research and the attractiveness of the video.

Jessica Burridge, PhD student (School of Veterinary Medicine and Science, University of Nottingham) made a video analysing the behaviour and decisions of owners on the welfare of working equids, for which she won second prize. On the other hand, Laura Estévez, student of the Master's Degree in Global Health: Integration of Environmental, Human and Animal Health, from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of our University, won third place for presenting her research on farmer-animal relations in high mountain communities in Mexico and Ecuador.

The competition was held online on the Zoom platform, organised by Amelia García (Dept. of Veterinary Pathology and Public Health, F. of Veterinary Medicine, University of Nottingham) and Virginia Resconi (Dept. of Animal Production and Food Science, F. of Veterinary Medicine, University of Zaragoza, Instituto Agroalimentario de Aragón IA2), where the 8-minute videos were presented (in English or Spanish) and the contestants answered questions about their work. Armando Mendez (Data engineer) and Almudena Ortiz (Bioscience) from the University of Nottingham, together with Irene Pérez Ibarra (Economics, Sociology and Agricultural Policy, Unizar), completed the five-member jury, who assessed the contestants.
