Composition

It is composed of ten coordinators of doctoral programmes at the University of Zaragoza, elected by the School’s Management Committee, two from each branch of knowledge, each having at least two recognized research evaluation periods. From among them, they elect a Chair, who is appointed by the Rector, and the Chair designates a Secretary from among the members of the Committee.

Functions

  • To resolve academic complaints related to doctoral studies.
  • To prepare the annual quality report on doctoral studies and their programmes, following the procedure established by the Doctoral School, including assessments and recommendations addressed to the academic committees of the different doctoral programmes when appropriate.
  • To propose general guidelines for the preparation, processing, and evaluation of doctoral theses.
  • To report on proposals for the appointment of honorary doctorate recipients (Doctor Honoris Causa) by the University of Zaragoza, as well as other distinctions related to doctoral studies, including the Extraordinary Doctoral Award.
  • To recognize research experience, according to public and objective criteria and by branch of knowledge, for candidates to serve as thesis supervisors or members of thesis examination committees who do not have formally accredited research experience.
  • To exceptionally authorize the co-supervision of a thesis by three supervisors when academic reasons apply (thematic interdisciplinarity or theses supervised by a junior supervisor together with two experienced supervisors from different disciplines), or in programmes developed through national or international collaboration.
  • To resolve appeals submitted by doctoral candidates and supervisors concerning:
    • Refusal to admit a thesis for processing.
    • Refusal to authorize the defense of a thesis.
  • To decide on authorization for thesis defense when observations are raised during the public review period.
  • To authorize the appointment of an evaluation committee composed of five members and two substitutes when requested by a thesis supervisor.
  • To approve applications for joint supervision (cotutelle) theses or admission to joint supervision involving doctoral candidates from the University of Zaragoza or a foreign university.
  • To authorize submission of a thesis in the format of a compendium of publications.
  • To approve additional requirements proposed by a doctoral programme’s Academic Committee for submission of a thesis as a compendium of publications.
  • To issue declarations of equivalence to the academic level of Doctor.
  • To decide on applications for admission to doctoral studies submitted by holders of non-homologated foreign degrees issued by countries outside the European Higher Education Area (EHEA).

Meetings

The Doctoral Committee meets monthly, usually on the last Wednesday of each month. Whenever possible, documentation submitted to the Doctoral School of the University of Zaragoza (EDUZ) should be processed with at least five working days’ notice
