Industrial Doctorate Mention

The Standing Committee of the EDUZ Steering Committee may grant the inclusion of a mention "Industrial Doctorate" in the doctoral degree, provided that the established conditions are met.

Requirements

  • The thesis must develop a research project of industrial, commercial, social or cultural interest of an entity, public or private company or public administration, excluding universities, public research bodies (national or regional) and university hospitals. Exceptionally, these institutions (except universities) will be accepted, provided that the content of the thesis is eminently applied. For the purposes of determining the consideration of industrial research or experimental development, the definitions contained in Commission Regulation (EU) 651/2014 of 17 June 2014, declaring certain categories of aid compatible with the internal market in application of Articles 107 and 108 of the Treaty, or regulation replacing it, in force at the time of submitting the report, shall apply.

  • The doctoral student must have been employed by the entity, company or public administration where the research project has been carried out for at least one year during the development of the thesis, a substantial part of which must have been carried out in the former.

  • The direct relationship between the doctoral thesis and the work carried out by the doctoral student in the institution or company must be formalised in a scientific-technical report, which must be approved by the Standing Committee of the EDUZ Steering Committee, with a positive report from the Academic Committee of the doctoral programme.

  • That a framework agreement (and its corresponding annex) has been signed between the entity, company or public administration and the university for the academic development of the doctoral thesis, which will establish, as a minimum, the obligations of the parties and the industrial property rights that may be generated, as well as the selection process of the doctoral students.

  • The doctoral student will have a thesis supervisor appointed by the University of Zaragoza and a person in charge appointed by the institution, company or public administration, who may be, where appropriate, the thesis supervisor. Under no circumstances may the person in charge appointed by the company form part of the thesis examining board.

Processing

Documentation to be submitted in the first two years of thesis writing

  • Before the end of the second year after enrolment on the PhD programme, the PhD student must submit anapplication to the programme's Academic Committee by electronic registration at the administrative headquarters of the PhD programme, , including a report certifying that the industrial research or experimental development project in which he/she is participating is directly related to the thesis being carried out.
The Academic Committee will report on the application and submit it to the Standing Committee of the EDUZ Steering Committee for authorisation, if appropriate.

  • Before the end of the second year after enrolment in the Doctoral Programme, a framework collaboration agreement must be signed between the parties and an annex (if there is already an agreement with the company, it is only necessary to sign the annex), according to the established formats. This agreement will indicate the obligations of the UZ and the obligations of the company or public administration, as well as the procedure for the selection of doctoral students.
The PhD student or thesis supervisor will send these documents directly to the EDUZ by electronic registration, where they will be reviewed and the signatures of the academic authorities will be collected: Rector (framework agreement) and the Director of the EDUZ (annex).

If the agreement has been signed through the OTRI, it will only be necessary to process the application to carry out the doctoral thesis in the industrial mention modality, as indicated in the first point.

In addition to the documentation required in all cases, the specific documentation indicated on the page Documentation of the thesis deposit must be submitted.

The Academic Committee of the Doctoral Programme will report on the application and submit it to the Standing Committee of the EDUZ Steering Committee for authorisation, if appropriate.
