Ethical Issues in Scientific Research (9:30 AM – 11:30 AM)
In this first session, we will address all ethical issues that may be related to a scientific research project, including: misuse, dual use, benefit sharing, human embryonic stem cells and human embryos, human participation in biomedical and social science research projects, the use of human cells or organs in research, the use of personal data in research projects, the use of pathogens, the use of genetically modified organisms, the use of animals in research, the use of artificial intelligence in research, the participation of non-EU countries in research projects, and laboratory biosafety considerations. All these issues must be evaluated in every scientific project, and researchers must address all these points in response to this mandatory requirement that arises directly from society through the laws in force that we must comply with.
The Importance of Integrity in Research (12:00 - 14:00)
Research integrity occupies a central place in scientific progress and represents a genuine approach that all researchers must adopt in their pursuit of truth. It also underscores trust in the results published by other researchers that are used to advance our knowledge, and respect for the scientific record, which must not be tainted by fabricated, copied, or altered results that force them to erroneously support a pre-existing hypothesis. This session will discuss reproducibility in research, Codes of Good Scientific Practice, the need to teach integrity, and the reasons for and consequences of research misconduct—both for the researchers involved and for the research community and society as a whole. This session will be critically illustrated with numerous examples of research misconduct.
