Training for tutors and supervisors
Nowadays, the quality of doctoral supervision is considered a determining factor in the success of thesis projects. Supervisors are responsible not only for advising and guiding students in relation to their proposed research plan, but also for helping them to design and implement a training plan that ensures they acquire certain cross-disciplinary skills. Thus, adequate monitoring and support of doctoral students by their thesis supervisors results in improved training for researchers in training and higher quality doctoral theses.
In line with one of the priorities identified at the Conference of Directors of Spanish Doctoral Schools and with recommendations from both the Ministry and the EUA (European University Association), EDUZ wishes to promote the training of thesis supervisors at the University of Zaragoza. To this end, an introductory workshop on the professionalisation of doctoral supervision has been organised, taught by members of the training group at the Universitat Rovira i Virgili and funded by the Vice-Rectorate for Academic Policy at the University of Zaragoza. This course aims to help researchers reflect on their role as thesis supervisors and optimise their training capacity by providing them with monitoring strategies and tools, covering the following topics:
- What is currently expected of a doctoral supervisor.
- Analysis of the main functions of the supervisor.
- Monitoring mechanisms and tools.
We hope to continue offering this type of workshop over the coming academic years. In any case, we have decided to open the cross-disciplinary training courses organised by EDUZ (modules 2 to 6). Priority will be given to doctoral students, so the participation of directors will be subject to the availability of places on the course.
- Scientific information management.
- Professional career and entrepreneurship.
- Research and society.
- Instrumental or technical aspects.
- Soft skills, social and emotional intelligence.
The G9 offers a course on doctoral thesis supervision and mentoring.
