Industrial specialisation in the Doctorate degree
Requirements
The thesis must develop a research project of industrial, commercial, social or cultural interest for an organisation, public or private company or public administration, excluding universities, public research bodies (national or regional) and university hospitals. In exceptional cases, these institutions (with the exception of universities) will be accepted, provided that the content of the thesis is predominantly applied.
The PhD candidate must have been employed by the organisation, company or public administration where the research project was carried out for at least one year whilst working on the thesis, and a substantial part of the thesis must have been carried out within that organisation, company or public administration.
The direct link between the doctoral thesis and the work carried out by the doctoral candidate at the organisation or company must be formalised in a scientific and technical report, which must be approved by the Standing Committee of the EDUZ Management Committee, subject to a prior favourable report from the Academic Committee of the doctoral programme.
That a framework agreement (and its corresponding annex) between the organisation, company or public administration and the university for the academic development of the doctoral thesis, which shall set out, as a minimum, the obligations of the parties and any industrial property rights that may arise, as well as the selection process for doctoral candidates.
The doctoral candidate shall have a thesis supervisor appointed by the University of Zaragoza and a designated representative appointed by the organisation, company or public administration, who may, where applicable, act as the thesis director. Under no circumstances may the supervisor appointed by the company be a member of the thesis assessment panel.
Procedure
Documents to be submitted
The doctoral candidate must submit via electronic registration at the administrative headquarters of the PhD Programme a application to undertake a doctoral thesis under the industrial PhD scheme, addressed to the programme’s Academic Committee and including a report attesting that the industrial research or experimental development project in which they are participating is directly related to the thesis they are undertaking.
The Academic Committee shall report on the application submitted, forwarding it to the Standing Committee of the EDUZ Management Committee for its approval, if appropriate.
It is necessary to sign a framework collaboration agreement between the parties and an annex (if an agreement with the company already exists, it would only be necessary to sign the annex), in accordance with the established formats. This agreement shall set out the obligations of the UZ and those of the company or public administration, as well as the procedure for selecting PhD students.
The PhD student or their thesis supervisor shall send these documents directly to the EDUZ via the electronic registry, where they will be reviewed and the signatures of the academic authorities obtained: the Vice-Chancellor (framework agreement) and the Director of the EDUZ (annex).
