The Real Decreto 592/2014, de 11 de julio, regulates external academic internships for university students. Although undertaking external internships is not a common activity among doctoral candidates, there are cases in which completing them may be beneficial both for the development of the doctoral thesis and for the host company.

Procedure

The application is submitted by the supervisor of the doctoral candidate who will carry out the internship at a company or institution. This is done through the form available on the website of the University’s Guidance and Employment Service (Universa), in the section aimed at teaching and research staff (PDI).

Once the application is generated in PDF format, it is received by the Internship and Employment Service (Universa). After it has been reviewed and validated, the document must be signed by both the Coordinator of the Doctoral Program and the Director of the Doctoral School of the University of Zaragoza (through Circuitofirmas).

Once the approved and signed application is received, Universa manages the Educational Cooperation Agreement with the company or institution hosting the doctoral candidate, as well as the annex to the agreement specifying the internship conditions (previously detailed in the application).

The doctoral candidate must upload the document “Appendix” with their original signature through REGTEL.

The person responsible at the company must electronically sign the “Appendix.”

Social Security Contributions – Social Security Number

As of January 1, 2024, in order to undertake external internships within doctoral studies, it is necessary to be registered and make contributions to the Social Security system, whether the internships are paid or unpaid.

Therefore, it is essential to provide the Social Security affiliation number (NUSS).

Information on how to check or request the NUSS, as well as how it must be communicated, can be found here.
