Types of doctoral stays

In order to advance and/or deepen the development of the thesis, during doctoral studies it is important to undertake research or training stays at universities and research centres other than the University of Zaragoza, both national and international. There are two types:

  • Conventional stays. These can be either training or research stays and can be carried out at Spanish or foreign universities or research centres.

  • Stays to qualify for international recognition in the doctoral degree. A total of three months outside Spain must be completed at one or more prestigious higher education institutions or research centres. If several stays are undertaken, at least one of them must last for a minimum of one month. As a general rule, the stays may not be carried out at institutions in the doctoral student's country of origin, residence or work.

Theses under a joint supervision arrangement require stays that will follow their own requirements and procedures.

Procedure

Before the stay

Application

The doctoral student must submit the specific application form endorsed by the director and the tutor, as appropriate, to the administrative office of the Doctoral Programme and addressed to the Academic Committee of the Doctoral Programme sufficiently in advance:

  1. Application for conventional stay

  2. Application for thesis stays eligible for international recognition

Resolution

Once the stay has been authorised by the Academic Committee of the Doctoral Programme, the programme's administrative office will send the resolution of the Academic Committee to the EDUZ. Likewise, EDUZ must be notified of any changes to what was initially authorised.

In the case of stays by persons applying for international recognition on their degree, the Standing Committee of the Management Committee must give its approval, which shall be notified to the applicant and the programme.

After completing the stay

The doctoral student must include the following in the Activity Document (DAD) on the SIGMA platform for evaluation:

  • Report on the stay on the work carried out, following the specific report form after the end of the stay. This must include a summary of all the activities carried out during the stay in relation to the work plan and activities set out in the application, so that the degree of compliance can be assessed. In the case of training stays, details of the training received and its suitability for the research and/or doctoral training plan must be provided. Likewise, any incidents and changes to the planned programme that have taken place must be reported. It should be noted that if these incidents or changes involve a reduction in the length of the stay, they may lead to non-compliance with the requirements for applying for the International Mention on the Doctorate degree, if applicable.

  • Certificate from the person responsible for the stay at the host institution, whether it is a conventional or international stay, clearly stating the start and end dates of the stay, the activities carried out and the name of the person responsible at the host institution, who shall sign it. The document must include the corporate identity elements (letterhead, logo, stamp, etc.) of the institution. If you are applying for the international mention to be added to your Doctorate degree, you must submit it at the time of application for admission to the thesis process, together with the rest of the required documentation.
