Medieval Studies Workshop | 16th and 17th of April

The GIHM organises the annual Workshop on Medieval Studies (WEM) at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto, which aims to bring together Master's and PhD students in Medieval Studies from Portuguese and foreign universities.

The WEM, open to master's and doctoral students in History, Art History, Archaeology, Philosophy, Philology and Medieval Literature, is a space for the discussion of ideas and the presentation of thesis/dissertation projects (master's and doctoral), with the aim of contributing to the improvement of work in progress. Candidates who intend to present the final results of completed or nearly completed studies/articles will not be selected.

The 18th edition of this workshop will be held on 16 and 17 April 2026, entirely in person, in Meeting Room 1 of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto.

The results of the selection process will be announced before 1 March 2026.

Candidates whose proposals are selected must submit their articles, following the instructions provided by the GIHM, to gihmedieval@gmail.com before 1 April 2026.

WEM sessions will last 45 minutes, distributed as follows: each participant will have 15 minutes to present their work; then a colleague (5 minutes) and an expert on the topic (10 minutes) will comment on their work; the last 15 minutes will be used for the presenter's responses and discussion with the audience.

Each participant will have to read the text of another candidate and prepare scientific comments of a maximum of 5 minutes. The working languages will be Portuguese, English or Spanish.

The research papers presented at the WEM are published in Incipit, the digital edition of the GIHM available on the website of the Digital Library of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto.
