Professor Alan E. Gelfand named Doctor Honoris Causa of the University of Zaragoza

At its meeting on 25 June, the Governing Council approved the proposal to award an honorary doctorate from the University of Zaragoza to Mr Alan E. Gelfand. Born on 17 April 1945 in New York, he studied at Stanford University and is currently Professor Emeritus of Statistical Sciences at Duke University. He has made notable contributions to Bayesian statistics.

This proposal is motivated by Professor Gelfand's close ties with a large number of researchers at the University of Zaragoza, in particular his constant support for the Department of Statistical Methods.

Professor Gelfand's scientific contributions in the field of mathematics, and in particular statistics, are highly significant and attest to his global leadership in the development of Bayesian methods. All of this has benefited the research activity of the University of Zaragoza, boosting its profile and prestige both nationally and internationally. The investiture ceremony will be held in the Paraninfo on 24 October.
