Evaluation of the training process

Annually, the academic committee of the doctoral programme must evaluate the progress of doctoral students, who, assisted by their directors and tutors, will draw up a document that includes a Research Plan and a Personal Training Plan, following the model established for this purpose. This document must be submitted through the SIGMA-PhD Management platform before the end of the first year from the date of enrolment, coinciding with the deadline indicated in the academic calendar. In addition, it will be possible to improve and detail throughout your stay on the programme, through the monitoring reports that must be submitted from the second year of academic supervision. Likewise, through SIGMA, directors and tutors must accept these documents and submit their reports. The activities registered and accepted in SIGMA as part of the Doctoral Activities Document (DAD) will also be assessed.

A positive evaluation will be a prerequisite for continuing on the programme. In the event of a negative assessment, which will be duly communicated to the PhD student by the Academic Committee, a new assessment will be required within a maximum period of six months, for which purpose a new document must be drawn up, including the research and personal training plan (first-year PhD students) or a new monitoring report (second-year and subsequent PhD students), also endorsed by the director(s) and tutor(s). In the event of a new negative assessment, the academic committee must issue a reasoned report, after hearing the doctoral student, who will be permanently withdrawn from the doctoral programme.

In order for the doctoral thesis to be admitted for processing, the doctoral student must have at least two positive evaluations. In addition, the academic year corresponding to that in which the thesis is to be submitted must have been positively evaluated, and the academic committee will evaluate this at the time of considering the admission for processing.

Research plan

It should include the title of the thesis, introduction and justification of the topic under study, working hypothesis, methodology and the expected objectives, as well as the means and time schedule to achieve them.

Personal training plan

It will contain a forecast of the different training activities that will take place during the doctoral thesis (courses, seminars, mobility activities, etc.). The Doctoral School offers a wide variety of transversal training activities each academic year and, on the other hand, each doctoral programme organises specific training activities. For mobility stays, prior authorisation is required from the academic committee of the doctoral programme and different financial aid is available.

A record of all these activities will be kept in the Doctoral Activities Document (DAD) through the SIGMA platform. Once the PhD student has included an activity and the corresponding supporting documents, the thesis supervisor(s) or tutor(s) must accept the proposal for the activity to be included in the DAD. It is recommended that the tutor(s) or thesis supervisor(s) advise the PhD student before registering the activities.

The activities that the doctoral student may carry out during a period of sick leave cannot be taken into account as part of his or her training, nor can they be incorporated into the DAD.

Follow-up reports (from the second year of mentoring onwards)

Doctoral students must present their research progress annually to the academic committee of their doctoral programme, as well as report any incidents and changes in the plan that have taken place, for assessment by the academic committee of the doctoral programme.

In the case of being in possession of a pre-doctoral contract, any change in the title of the thesis, directors, etc. requires the express approval of the funding body, which will be processed by the Research Management Service of the University of Zaragoza (SGI).
